F1 Flags Explained: What Every Flag Means
Quick answer: Green means the track is clear, yellow means danger and no overtaking, red stops the session, blue tells a driver to let a faster car through, and the chequered flag ends the session. Black flags deal with penalties and car problems.

Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car
After a crash, race control may send out the Safety Car, which leads the field at a reduced speed while marshals work. Overtaking is not allowed. For smaller incidents, a Virtual Safety Car slows every driver to a set pace without a physical car. Both often change race strategy, because a pit stop under the Safety Car costs less time.
Lights and digital panels
Modern circuits also use digital light panels around the track and on the steering wheel display, so drivers see warnings even when they cannot see a marshal. The flags remain the official signal.
Flags in the grandstand
Fans bring their own flags too. A team or driver flag is one of the best things to take to a race. See your first F1 race checklist.
