F1 Model Car Scales Explained: 1:64 to 1:8, and Who Makes Them
Quick answer: the scale tells you how many times smaller the model is than the real car. A recent F1 car is about 5.6 metres long, so a 1:43 model is roughly 13 cm, a 1:24 roughly 23 cm and a 1:18 roughly 31 cm. Pick 1:43 to build a big collection, 1:24 for a first model or a gift, and 1:18 for a detailed centrepiece.
F1 model scales compared
| Scale | Approximate length | Detail | Best for | Makers in our range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:43 | About 13 cm | Good | Large collections, shelves and desks | Bburago, Minichamps |
| 1:24 | About 23 cm | Good | First models, gifts, younger fans | Bburago, Spark, Looksmart |
| 1:18 | About 31 cm | High | A centrepiece model | Bburago, GP Replicas, Minichamps, Spark, Looksmart, Amalgam |
| 1:12 front wings | Nose and front wing only | Very high | Collectors who want a statement piece | Amalgam |
Lengths are approximate and vary with each car's real size, older cars are often shorter than today's.
1:43: the collector's scale
1:43 is the classic scale for building a full grid or a driver's career on one shelf. Models are compact but still show the livery and sponsor details clearly. Our 1:43 range includes Minichamps models such as Lando Norris's MCL38 from the 2024 Monaco GP in the special Ayrton Senna tribute livery, and Bburago models like Charles Leclerc's SF-25 from the 2025 Miami GP.
1:24: the easy first model
1:24 is a good middle size: big enough to enjoy, small enough for any room and usually affordable. Bburago's 1:24 die-cast models, such as Oscar Piastri's MCL38 from the 2024 Miami GP and Leclerc's SF-24, make great gifts.
1:18: the centrepiece
At around 30 cm, a 1:18 model shows the car's shape, wings and details properly. The range runs from accessible Bburago die-cast, like Lewis Hamilton's SF-25 from the 2025 Miami GP, to high end GP Replicas models of historic cars and hand built Amalgam models made using the teams' original CAD data and official paint codes.
1:12 front wings: a piece of the car
Amalgam also makes 1:12 replicas of the nose and front wing, such as the Red Bull Racing RB19 front wing and the Ferrari SF23 front wing. They show the complex aerodynamics up close and look striking on a wall or desk.

How to choose your next model
- Start with the story: a first win, a title season or a special livery, like Miami or Monaco editions, makes a model more meaningful.
- Stick to one scale: models look best together when they share a scale.
- Plan the space: a row of 1:18 cars needs a long shelf; ten 1:43 cars fit on one.
- Check the maker: the maker tells you more about detail and price than the scale does.
Shop by team: Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull Racing and Williams, or by driver: Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. See everything in collectibles and LEGO.

Frequently asked questions
How big is a 1:18 F1 model car?
Around 30 cm long for a recent F1 car, which is about 5.6 metres in real life. Older cars are shorter, so their 1:18 models are smaller.
Which scale is the most detailed?
Larger scales usually show more detail, so 1:18 models and 1:12 front wings are the most detailed. The maker matters too: hand built Amalgam models are more detailed than mass produced die-cast models at the same scale.
What does die-cast mean?
Die-cast models have a body made from cast metal, combined with plastic parts for fine details such as wings and mirrors.
Are these models officially licensed?
Yes. The models in our range are official licensed products made by Bburago, Minichamps, GP Replicas, Amalgam and LEGO.
