F1 2026 Rules Explained: New Cars, Engines and Active Aero

Audi F1 Team 2026 team t-shirt

Quick answer: The 2026 rules introduced smaller and lighter cars with movable front and rear wings, power units that take roughly half their power from the electric motor, and 100% sustainable fuel. DRS was replaced by an overtake mode that gives the chasing driver extra electric power.

Fuel Partly sustainable 100% sustainable
Overtaking aid DRS Overtake mode

The new power units

The engines are still 1.6 litre V6 hybrids, but the complex MGU-H has gone and the electric motor is almost three times more powerful. Combustion and electric power are now close to a 50/50 split, so managing battery energy around a lap is a key part of driving. The simpler rules also attracted new manufacturers: Audi builds its own engine and Red Bull works with Ford. More in the new F1 engine rules.

Active aerodynamics

The front and rear wings can now change position. On straights they open to cut drag for top speed, and in corners they close to add grip. This replaces the old idea of a single DRS flap that only opened in set zones.

Overtake mode

A driver within a set distance of the car ahead can use extra electric energy to attack. It works anywhere on the lap, not only in DRS zones, which gives drivers more choice about where to try a move.

Other changes

  • Narrower tyres, still on 18 inch wheels.
  • Stronger safety structures.
  • Driver cooling vests are mandatory when a heat hazard is declared, which matters at hot races such as Qatar and Singapore.

New rules, new teamwear

FAQ

Is DRS gone in 2026?

Yes. It was replaced by active aerodynamics and an overtake mode that gives the chasing car extra electric power.

What is the MGU-H and why was it removed?

It recovered energy from the turbo. It was expensive and complex, and removing it made the rules simpler for new manufacturers.

Are F1 cars smaller in 2026?

Yes. The wheelbase is shorter, the car is 10 cm narrower and about 30 kg lighter.
